The Customer Is Already Searching for You
Think about the last time you needed a service from a business you didn’t know. In my case, I needed an RO repair. I didn’t ask anyone for a contact number or walk around looking for an RO repair shop. I simply took out my phone and searched “RO repair near me” on Google. A few businesses appeared, and I started checking their ratings and reviews before deciding whom to call. The problem was solved.
This may look like a very normal thing, but if we look at it from a marketing perspective, something important happened here. I had never interacted with that business before, and I probably didn’t even know its name. I had a problem, searched for a solution, found a few local businesses and then chose one based on the information available on Google.
This is how many local customers behave today. They don’t always know the name of the business they want to buy from. Sometimes they simply search for the product or service they need. This is where Google Business Profile becomes important because it can help a local business appear at exactly the moment when a customer is looking for it.
What Is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile is the profile that allows a business to appear on Google Search and Google Maps. It can show important information such as the business name, address, phone number, opening hours, reviews, photos, directions, products and services.
For a local business, this is much more than simply putting your name on Google. Think about a physical shop. Before entering, a customer notices the signboard, location, appearance and products displayed outside. A similar thing happens online when someone finds your business through Google.
The customer may not know anything about you before seeing your profile. So, the information available there becomes part of the first impression. If the profile looks complete and trustworthy, the customer has a reason to consider the business. If it looks outdated or incomplete, they may simply move to the next option.
Why Google Business Profile Matters for Local Businesses
Look at how much people use their phones today. Whenever we want to find a restaurant, hotel, mechanic, salon, repair service or even a small shop that we don’t know about, Google is often one of the first places we check.
I personally use Google Maps for directions and queries all the time. When my friends and I are looking for hotels, we don’t just look at the name. We check the location, ratings, reviews and photos before making a decision. If the information looks good, we consider that place. If something feels wrong, we move to another option.
The interesting part is that this behaviour doesn’t require the customer to know the business beforehand. Someone can search “hotel near me”, “RO repair near me” or “drip irrigation near me” and discover businesses they had never heard about. For a local business, that is a big opportunity because Google can become a bridge between the customer’s problem and the business that can solve it.
This is also where keyword research becomes relevant. Businesses need to understand what their customers are actually searching for instead of assuming that customers will always search using the business’s exact name or industry terminology.
Your Google Business Profile Is Your First Impression
Imagine two businesses providing the same service. One has a 4.8-star rating, hundreds of reviews, recent photos, correct opening hours and a working phone number. The other has a 3.6-star rating, only a few reviews, old photographs and incomplete information.
Even if you know nothing about either business, you will probably feel more comfortable contacting the first one. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the first business provides better service, but it certainly looks more trustworthy from the customer’s point of view.
This is something businesses sometimes forget. They know their own business, their products and the quality of their service, so they assume customers already understand these things. But a new customer doesn’t have that information. They only see what is available to them, and your Google Business Profile can become a major part of that first impression.
Your physical shop may be excellent, your employees may be helpful and your products may be good. But if the customer sees outdated information or poor-quality photos before visiting you, they may never get the chance to experience any of that.
Reviews Can Change the Decision
Reviews are probably one of the most important parts of a Google Business Profile. If you have never heard about a business before, you have very little reason to trust it. But when you see a business with a strong rating and a large number of genuine reviews, your perception changes.
That’s exactly what happened when I needed an RO repair. I searched for the service and checked the ratings and reviews before deciding whom I should call. I wasn’t doing some complicated market research. I was simply trying to avoid making a bad choice.
The same thing happens when people search for hotels, restaurants or other services. Reviews act as social proof because they show that other customers have already dealt with the business. Of course, a five-star rating doesn’t automatically mean that a business is perfect, but it can give a new customer enough confidence to consider contacting it.
Fake reviews can create the opposite effect. Customers are becoming more careful about reviews that look unnatural, repetitive or suspicious. A business should focus on getting genuine feedback from real customers instead of trying to make the review number look impressive.
Don’t Ignore Photos on Your Google Business Profile
Now imagine searching for a hotel and finding two different profiles. The first one has several recent photos of the rooms, entrance, reception and surroundings. The second one has one old and blurry photograph. Which one would you trust more?
Probably the first one.
Photos help customers understand what they are going to get before they visit. A restaurant can show its food and seating area. A salon can show its interior and work. A hotel can show its rooms. A repair service can show completed work.
The same idea can be applied to almost every local business. An agriculture business can show its products, irrigation installations, field work and equipment. A customer may not know much about the business, but good and relevant photos can make the business feel more real and trustworthy.
This is also why wrong or outdated photos can be frustrating. If a customer sees one thing online and finds something completely different after visiting, it can affect their trust in the business.
Keep Your Google Business Profile Updated
This sounds like a small thing, but it can make a big difference. Imagine searching for a business and finding an old phone number. You call it, but the number doesn’t work. Or Google says the business is open until 8 PM, but you reach there at 7 PM and find the shop closed.
These things may look small from the business owner’s perspective, but for the customer they can be frustrating. If someone is already comparing three or four businesses, they don’t have much reason to spend extra time trying to contact one that has incorrect information.
That’s why businesses should regularly check their phone number, address, opening hours, category, services and other important information. Your Google Business Profile should not be treated as something you create once and then forget about. It should change when your business changes.
A local business doesn’t need to update everything every day. The important thing is to make sure that whenever a customer checks your profile, the information they see is useful and accurate.
A Real Example: Vaibhav Agritech
I have also seen this from the business side. If you search for Vaibhav Agritech, the business appears on Google with its rating, reviews, category, opening status, photos and directions.
For someone who already knows the business, this information may not seem very important. But imagine a farmer nearby who has never visited the business before. They may search for an agriculture-related business or a particular product or service and come across the profile. They can see the available information, check the reviews and photos, look at the location and then decide whether they want to contact or visit the business.
This is what makes Google Business Profile useful for local businesses. The customer doesn’t necessarily have to discover your shop by walking past it. They can discover you while sitting at home or while searching for something nearby.
And this is one reason I think Google Business Profile is still underrated. Many people use Google Maps every day, but many businesses still don’t treat their profile as an important part of their marketing.
Google Business Profile Doesn’t Guarantee Number One Ranking
There is one important thing businesses need to understand. Creating a Google Business Profile doesn’t mean that your business will automatically appear at number one for every local search. Local search depends on several factors, and businesses should not treat the profile as some kind of shortcut to the top of Google.
Google considers factors such as relevance, distance and prominence when showing local results. This means a business shouldn’t expect to rank first simply because it has created a profile.
Instead, think of your profile as a foundation. You want Google to understand what your business does and where it operates, while also giving customers enough information to decide whether your business is worth considering.
This is where Google Business Profile works together with other parts of digital marketing. Local SEO, content, keyword research, reviews and a good customer experience all contribute to how a business builds its online presence. SEO vs SEM is another example of how businesses need to understand the difference between simply being visible online and actively building their search presence.
The Problem Is That Many Businesses Still Ignore It
This is probably the biggest reason I call Google Business Profile underrated. Many local businesses have a profile, but they don’t really manage it. The phone number may be outdated, the opening hours may be wrong, there may be hardly any photos and customer reviews may not have any responses.
The owner might simply say, “My business is already listed on Google.” But having a listing and actually using it properly are two different things. A profile that has not been updated for a long time can give customers the impression that the business is not active or does not care about its online presence.
This is especially interesting because setting up the basic profile doesn’t require the kind of budget that traditional advertising requires. A small local business may not have thousands of rupees to spend every month on advertising, but it can still make sure that its Google presence is accurate, useful and trustworthy.
What Should a Local Business Actually Do?
The first step is simple: complete the basic information properly. Make sure your business name, category, address, phone number and opening hours are correct. If you provide specific services, make those clear as well. A customer should not have to guess what your business actually does.
Then focus on reviews and photos. Encourage genuine customers to leave honest reviews instead of trying to create fake ones. Add real photos of your business, products, services, team or completed work. You don’t need a professional photoshoot every week. Even clear and genuine photographs can give customers a better idea of what to expect.
Finally, look at the profile from the customer’s perspective. Don’t just ask whether every field has been filled. Search for your business as if you were a customer who had never heard about it before. Ask yourself whether the profile gives you enough information to make a decision. That small change in perspective can reveal many things that a business owner normally misses.
Final Thoughts
Digital marketing discussions often revolve around Instagram, Facebook, websites, paid advertising and SEO. All of these can be useful, but sometimes we forget about the platform where customers are already searching for local businesses.
Google Business Profile sits directly in that customer journey. Someone has a problem, they search for a solution, they find several businesses, they compare the information available to them and then they decide whom to contact or visit.
I was that customer when I searched for an RO repair. My friends and I are those customers when we compare hotels. And I am sure many people reading this have done the same thing without even thinking about it.
That’s why I think local businesses should stop looking at Google Business Profile as just a free listing. It can be one of the first places where a potential customer discovers your business, forms an opinion about it and decides whether to take the next step.
Your business may have the best product or service in the area, but if a customer cannot find you or doesn’t trust what they see online, they may never give you a chance.
Your Google Business Profile isn’t just a listing. It may be the first salesperson your customer meets.
